It’s Macintosh Computer Day

January 24 is Macintosh Computer Day. Why a day to celebrate Macintosh computers? It is not necessarily about Macintoshes per se; instead, it is a day to mark when this type of computer was first introduced and consequently, trace the history that led that early Macintosh to become the Apple computers that we all know and love today.

The very first Macintosh computer was introduced on January 24, 1984. Since then, the Macintosh computer has grown and evolved into the Macs many people own in 2022.

The creators of this computer named it after a variety of apples – the McIntosh. Needless to say, whatever apple species the computer may have been named after, Apple founder Steve Jobs was indeed onto something back in 1984 when he introduced the personal computer to the world.

IBM versus Apple

Just before the launch of the Macintosh computer in 1984, IBM had the market proverbially cornered as far as personal computing. Many feared that IBM would ultimately come to monopolize the world of personal computers. When the 1984 Macintosh was released, the game most certainly changed.

Apple would further push its Macintosh computer by introducing a monumental and ever so memorable Super Bowl commercial. They would spend over $15 million on this commercial, and the results would be pretty impressive, boosting Apple stock significantly.

The commercial referenced George Orwell’s novel 1984. It showed a dystopic world in which the state-controlled the inhabitants. The sudden and magnificent introduction of the Macintosh personal computer would free humanity. And in the process, it would help usher in a new era, a new era of communication, a new era of thought, a new era of creativity. Indeed, Apple computers have since accomplished all of this and more.

The founder of Apple and thus, the introducer of the Macintosh computer really did have something of an incredible life story. Jobs are regularly quoted in the business world by inspiring and motivating teams of people, technology-focused or otherwise. Among his most famous quotes: “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance.” This is truly a lesson for all business leaders, not just those in the tech sector.

A Few More Words of Wisdom from Steve Jobs

• Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow know what you truly want to become.

• Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.

• Sometimes, when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly and get on with improving your other innovations.

• You can’t just ask customers what they want and then try to give that to them. By the time you get it built, they’ll want something new.

• Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t do it. They just saw something.
